91暗网 Sociology Club receives Sam鈥檚 Club Foundation Local Charitable Grant

The 91暗网 Sociology Club recently received a $700 Sam鈥檚 Club Foundation Local Charitable Grant for its valuable contributions to society.

Emily Austin, current Sociology Club president and a senior sociology major from Winnsboro, was thrilled to receive the funds. 鈥淎ll I could say was 鈥榳ow鈥� when I saw the check.鈥�

Dr. Neil R. White, a 91暗网 assistant professor of sociology and the club鈥檚 advisor, credited Austin for securing the donation.

According to the Corporate Social Responsibility Newswire, Wal-Mart empowers its associates to serve the needs of their communities through its 鈥淕ood Works鈥� initiative.

The Sociology Club, which began around 1982, has been active in a campaign of recycling cell phones and printer cartridges and informing the university and community about the benefits of recycling. Recycling cell phones began in an effort to help with Hurricane Katrina relief. Currently, the club donates the phones to an organization that provides free cell phones to soldiers, along with free phone minutes to call their loved ones.

They are active participants in the university鈥檚 Adopt-a-Spot Program, which allows university organizations guardianship of a spot on campus with the agreement that they will have two or more cleanup days a semester.

White said the Sociology Club takes it a step further. 鈥淓ven on days when we don鈥檛 have a cleanup planned, we try to pick up any trash on our spot as we feel a sense of pride and ownership.鈥�
